ADAPTED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.
Adapted Physical Activity is the term used to define all types of Physical Activities, from fitness to sports, which need modifications in rules, specific techniques or materials in order to ease people with disabilities or specific needs to take part in sports. Its main purpose is to provide safe, personal satisfying and successful experiences for people of different abilities.
We may find sports in which people with disabilities compete between themselves in segregated environments, they are called Adapted Sports, or sports in which disable people and people without any specific disability play together with adapted rules. That is called Inclusive Sports.
The Inclusive Sports initiative promotes sport for all and the inclusion of all individuals and groups in sports. This new concept has its starting point in the consideration of everyone having skills and limitations, and the need of adjusting the games and sports to everyone's possibilities. It encourages participation in the most integrated and normal environment. "Being inclusive means adapting and modifying coaching practices and activities to ensure every participant, regardless of age, gender, ability level, disability and ethnic background has the opportunity to participate if they choose to" (Australian Sports Commission).
